With this commitment, we have joined a fast-growing network of businesses and other stakeholders seeking to contribute to a more inclusive and stable global market and help build prosperous and thriving societies around the world. With more than 8,343 participating companies from 135 countries, as well as over 3,000 non-business participants (as of January 2016), the Global Compact has emerged as a truly global initiative with a strong presence in both developing and developed nations. By promoting sustainable development, employing sound corporate citizenship and building a set of values based on universally accepted principles, we are shaping the environment that is critical for businesses to thrive.
Responsible business practices and cross-sector partnerships endorsed by UN Global Compact are fundamental to strengthening the global economy and ensuring environmental and social well-being. By creating employment, providing technical skills, strengthening management and bringing market-based solutions to pressing social and environmental problems, responsible businesses are a positive force in spurring development and improving human conditions. Participation in the UN Global Compact is a visible commitment to the implementation, disclosure, and promotion of the following universal principles:
- To support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights.
- To make sure that we are not complicit in human rights abuses.
- To uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining.
- To uphold the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor.
- To uphold the effective abolition of child labor.
- To uphold the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
- To support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges.
- To undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility.
- To encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
- To work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
Businesses, investors and civil society are increasingly considered to be a positive force for sustainable development and are expected to play an important role in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. These include the eradication of poverty, supporting quality education, creating sustainable cities and communities, ensuring gender and racial equality, acting on climate change and nurturing industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
As members of the UN Global Compact, we gladly endorse these ten principles on human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption, and affirm our commitment to implementing and upholding these principles in all aspects of our business and across all of our spheres of influence. We will ensure that the Global Compact and its principles will become a fundamental part of the strategy, culture and daily operations of Unique, and we will continue to engage in collaborative projects that advance the broader development objectives of the United Nations. We also commit to reporting on our progress to the Global Compact and each year. By engaging in responsible business practices, we strive to generate sustainable value that will help shape the environment that is critical for human life and business to thrive.
Global business as a force for good is at the very foundation of the Global Compact, whereby global corporations inherit a responsibility for achieving a better world through a shared commitment to sustainability. To foster a more inclusive and stable market, environment and society, the active engagement of businesses will be critical. Responsible business practices not only contribute to stakeholders and society in general, they have increasingly created long-term value for business itself.
